Volleyball Sweeps Surry Community College
SMC volleyball got another sweep Friday night against Surry Community College. After a 3 hour drive to the border of North Carolina and Virginia, the Pioneers were ready to get off the bus and play some volleyball. The girls started off strong in the first set, battling back and forth until the score was15-15. From there the Pioneers took off and won 25-20. The second set was much of the same, and middle blockers Ally Ruiz and Claudia Casey put several points on the score board and won the set 25-20. In the beginning of the third, the Pioneers lost a few rallies and Surry CC started to earn momentum. The Pioneers were down 6-15 and decided they needed to step it up. Freshman Savannah Ducote helped them to an 8 point serving run and put the Pioneers within 1. Through great blocking and defense, the Pioneers were able to quickly side out and earn points to end the match with a 25-18 win.
Middle blockers ran the match as Ally Ruiz led the Pioneers with 10 kills hitting .667 and Claudia Casey joined in with another 7 kills hitting .412. Libero Leslie Williams held the defense together once again with 7 digs per set.
The Pioneers are back in action Thursday September 27th, traveling to Davidson County Community College to play in a Tri-Match with Catawba Valley.
