Two Wrestlers Reach the Podium at Patriot Open

Williamsburg, KY – SMC Wrestling kick started their season with a strong showing at The Patriot Open Tournament, hosted by the University of the Cumberlands. The Open hosted 20 different teams from NCAA DII, NAIA, NCWA (club), and individuals wrestling unattached. Spartanburg Methodist was the only NJCAA school at the tournament.

Returning All-American, Tramon Jenkins (125 lber) ended the day undefeated (6-0) in route to winning the tournament.  Jenkins knocked off the #20 ranked wrestler, insert name of wrestler here, in NAIA. Tramon outscored his opponents 64-19 throughout the tournament with 1 fall, 1 tech fall, 2 majors decisions, and 2 decisions on the day. 174lber Caleb Spears finished the day in 3rd place, finishing 5-1 overall. Caleb faced two ranked NAIA opponents, 15th ranked, Cameron Simmons from Marion University and the 19th ranked, Nathan Walton from Cumberland, TN.

The Pioneers also had strong showings from Tramone Jenkins (133lber), Brandon Harris (149lber), and Camden Johnson (184lber). Tramone Jenkins went 5-1 before he was stopped due to the NCAA 6 match limit per day. Jenkins wrestled through a tough bracket, facing NAIA All-Americans. Camden Johnson ended his day at 4-1 before having to injury default out of the tournament due to a minor injury. Brandon Harris finished 3-2 on the day.

Overall, Coach Oliver was pleased with how the Pioneers looked in their first tournament of the season, having had each wrestler win at least one match on the day. "A great first event for all of our guys. We still have a few guys injured and are slowly getting them back into wrestling," said Coach Oliver "To be an NJCAA All-American you may have to wrestle 5 matches in a day and this tournament can be a great first look into that. Now we can go back make the adjustments and properly prepare for what is to come."
