Women's Basketball Opens Season up With a Win
The Pioneers won their season opener Saturday against region opponent Denmark Tech. Denmark tech won the tip and scored the first basket. That would be the only time that the Panthers had the lead. The Pioneers outscored Denmark in the first quarter 19-8 and only allowed the Panthers to score 6 in the 2nd quarter. SMC went into halftime with an impressive 19 point lead 33-14. Out of the ten 3 pointers the Pioneers had, 6 came in the second half, which included Adia Brown with back to back 3 pointers and the last one on the buzzer to end the 3rd quarter.
The final 61-38 the Pioneers were led by Bayleigh Ponds and Jayla Hopkins with 16 points a piece and Aliyah Whiteside with 10.
