Statesmen Earn Two Clutch Wins In Region X Tournament

SPARTANBURG, SC – Not only did Megan Vincent pitch out of two bases-loaded jams in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the sophomore had a key RBI in the top of the 6thinning to help the Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team upset No. 1 seed Spartanburg Methodist, 3-2, in the second game of the Region X Tournament at North Spartanburg Park Friday afternoon.

In the first game, the No. 4 seeded Statesmen defeated No. 5 seed USC Union 8-0 in five innings. With the pair of victories, RBC advances to Saturday's 2:30 pm against No. 2 seed SC Salkehatchie, which defeated Monroe (NY) College in its opening game Friday. The winner of the tournament receives a bid to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament at Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah on May 22-25, 2019.

Vincent went four and two-thirds innings in relief of Kiara Toler. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out nine. Toler allowed four hits and one run over two and a third innings, striking out two.

The RBC victory got a major boost from Erin Doyle who had two of the Statesmen's three hits. She belted a 2-run homer in the top of the 5thinning to erase a 1-0 deficit and put RBC ahead 2-1. RBC's second hit, courtesy of Vincent, came in the 6thinning after Katie Haney reached on an error and was eventually brought in by Vincent's hard hard-hit to centerfield.

In the opening game against USC Union, Toler blanked the Bantoms 8-0 in five innings. She allowed just two hits while striking out three and walking one. RBC scored six of its eight runs in the second inning, getting doubles from Kendra Cattanach, Jez Chitty, Allison Jarrett and Skyler Bagnall. RBC had eight hits, getting multiple his from Teri Jackson and Jarrett.
