Lady Senators fall twice in Walters State Invitational

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State came up on the short end twice on Saturday, falling 3-1 to Spartanburg Methodist (25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 25-19) and 3-2 to Catawba Valley (21-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-12) in the Walters State Invitational.

With the losses, Walters State fell to 10-12 on the season.

Against Spartanburg Methodist, the Lady Senators came back from a 12-7 deficit in the opening set to make it 12-11 and force a timeout. However, Spartanburg recovered and, at 21-17, scored the final four points to go up 1-0.

In the second set, the Lady Senators started strong and went up 8-5 after unbelievable digs from Hannah Freeman and Faith Heskett led to a kill by Mackenzie Sweigart. The lead grew from there and got to 12-6 before Spartanburg scored four straight to cut into the lead.

However, the Lady Senators kept the pace up and got their lead back to four at 17-13 after a service error from Spartanburg. The Lady Senators maintained the lead from there and a block from Jordan Moore ended the set and tied the match up.

In the third set, Walters State led early and scored three straight points to break a 5-5 tie. Spartanburg would recover and the two teams remained deadlocked until Spartanburg got some separation at 19-15. They would take the set 25-21 to go up 2-1.

The final set was a battle as well with both teams going back and forth. But, once again Spartanburg took control late and took the set 25-19.

In the second match, Catawba took a lead early and held it until two straight points gave Walters State an 18-16 lead. From there, the Lady Senators got up 23-17 and held off a late rally to take the set 25-21.

In the second set, it was more of the same until Walters State went up 11-7. The lead would grow to 14-9 and force a Spartanburg timeout. It was all Lady Senators from there as an overhit ball from Spartanburg gave the Lady Senators the set at 25-19.

However, the lead would not hold for Walters State as they fell in two close sets and then 15-12 in the deciding fifth set.
