Wilmington, NC - Sergio Esparrago scored in the 17th minute Thursday afternoon off an assist by David Segura, giving Cape Fear Community College's men's soccer team a 1-0 lead over Spartanburg Methodist.
However, that slim margin wasn't enough as Spartanburg rallied with goals in the 43rd and 60th minutes to defeat the Sea Devils, 2-1.
"We fought hard today but missed several chances to win the game," Cape Fear coach Chris Libert noted. "We needed a tie or win today to keep first or second place seeding's (in the conference tournament) alive. We still have a lot of soccer to be played. So, we are ready to continue our hard work for a conference championship."
Cape Fear's conference record dipped to 7-3-3 and 11-5-3 overall.
The Sea Devils' next encounter is Saturday, October vs. USC Lancaster at the North Campus Soccer Field. This regular season finale is set for 3:30 p.m.
