Sheton Scores Two Goals as Aztecs Women's Soccer Beat Spartanburg Methodist

The Pima Community College women's soccer team (20-1-2) opened its play in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament with big win in Pool A on Tuesday.

The No. 8 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 12 Spartanburg Methodist College 3-1. The Aztecs finish pool play tomorrow against No. 1 seed Eastern Florida State College with the winner advancing to the national semifinals.

With the game tied 1-1 at halftime, the Aztecs took control of the second half. Sophomore Callen Shelton scored her second goal of the game in the 60th minute after she received a pass up-field from fellow sophomore Devyn Hunley (Sabino HS) to put the Aztecs up for good.

Hunley helped put the exclamation point on the game after she scored her goal in the 69th minute with the assist from Shelton. She dribbled by a couple defenders and got passed the goalie for the score. The defense did the rest hosting Spartanburg Methodist without a shot on goal for the second half.

The Aztecs struck first in the game when Shelton received a cross-pass from fellow sophomore Lexxi Hanabergh (Sahuaro HS). She dribbled to the right and hit the shot with her left foot for the goal in the 31st minute. Spartanburg Methodist tied the game in the 38th minute when Kayla McMillian scored on an assist from Cyarah Wilson.

The Aztecs outshot Spartanburg Methodist 10-4 for the game as freshman goalkeeper Daniela Sanchez (Sabino HS) finished with three saves.

This is the first time the Pima women's soccer team has won 20 games in a single season under coach Kendra Veliz.

The Aztecs face No. 1 seed Eastern Florida State College tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. (ET).
