2nd ranked Pioneers earn Region X Regular Season Championship

JAMESTOWN, NC- 2nd ranked Pioneer Baseball improved to 35-9 overall and 19-5 in Region X play with a sweep of Guilford Tech. The Pioneers won game one 5-0 and game two 4-0, behind complete game shutout performances by Dylan Rogers and Kyle Halbohn.

Game one: SMC 5- GTCC 0

Dylan Rogers (8-2) tossed his 6th complete game and 2nd shutout of the year while lowering his ERA to 2.64 on the season.  Matt White and Kennard McDowell led the Pioneers at the plate each going 3-4, RBI, R. Zack Shields continued his strong season at the plate with a 2-2 performance with a double, triple, and RBI.

Game two:  SMC 4- GTCC 0

Not to be outdone by Rogers performance in game one  Kyle Halbohn (4-1) overpowered the Titans for a no-hitter. Halbohn struck out 10 and only allowed 2 walks in the complete game victory.  White continued to rake with a  2-4 performance including a double, and his second stolen base on the day. Sophomore Collin Steagall went 1-2, and blasted his sixth home run on the year. Brandon Burris went 1-3, with a triple and  RBI while Freshman Thatcher Coleman was 1-2 with a double and one run scored.

NOTES: Sunday's doubleheader with Guilford Tech has been cancelled due to poor weather. The Pioneers clinch the Region X regular season crown and earn an automatic berth in the District Championships to be hosted by the Region X Tournament Champion on May 16th and 17th. SMC will enter the the Region X Tournament as the #1 seed with a 19-5 Region X record. This years tourney will be in Kinston, NC starting on May 3rd.
