Wesley Rogers selected in fourth round by the Colorado Rockies

Wesley Rogers, the Pioneers centerfielder, was selected Friday afternoon by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round (#113) and became the school's highest draft pick in a quarter of a century.

Rogers' first destination with the Rockies is likely straight back to Grand Junction, Colo., where he last week he finished helping SMC to a third-place finish in the Junior College World Series. He batted .583 with a home run there at Suplizio Field, where Colorado's rookie-level team plays.

"I love Grand Junction," said Rogers, who also played last year with SMC in the Series. "Hopefully, I'll still be swinging the bat well there. ... I guess the timing of everything worked out. I was lucky enough to play well in Grand Junction and got hot. I wasn't thinking about the draft. I was just trying to play well and help us win."

Rogers (6-foot-4, 175 pounds) batted .351 for SMC this season with an on-base percentage of .479. He had 18 doubles, three triples, two homers (one at the World Series), 35 RBIs and 26 stolen bases in 29 attempts. After the tournament, he was asked by the Rockies to attend a pre-draft workout in Arizona instead of flying home with the team.
