Pioneer Baseball sweeps Surry CC on opening day

SPARTANBURG, SC., The fourth ranked Pioneer Baseball team took two games from visiting Surry Community College on Sunday afternoon, the Pioneers won game one 8-1 and game two 9-4. SMC pounded out 16 hits on the day including five home runs and five doubles. The Pioneers also drew eight walks and swiped four bases.

Freshman Ridge Chapman (8 K, 2 BB, HBP, 3 H, 1 R, 4IP) earned the win in game one while Freshman Doug Gressly (2 K, 2 BB, 2 H, 0 R, 4 IP) picked up the win in game two. 

Game one

Sophomore catcher Tyler Lancaster went 2-2, with a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Sophomore Mason Berne was 2-4 with a double, home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Freshman Kep Brown (1-3) hit his first collegiate home run while Bakari Gayle was 2-3 with two runs batted in and two stolen bases. 

Game two 

Chris Burgess powered the offense for SMC in game two. Burgess went 2-2 with a home run, double, three runs batted in and a run scored. Mason Berne hit his second home run of the day and drove in two more runs. Dominique Jackson homered and drove in a run while Kep Brown added a double and a run batted in. 

 

SMC returns to Mooneyham Field on February 13th as they host Catawba Valley CC
