Pioneers Split With No. 1 Team In The Country

Spartanburg, SC – SMC split with No. 1 ranked Walters State Community College on Wednesday, dropping the first game 9-4. Walters State controlled game one, holding SMC to only four hits. Houston Wright provided the Pioneers with some light with a solo homerun for the Pioneers in the fourth inning and another base hit in the bottom of the 7th. Other RBIs by John Miller and Andrew Krauss allowed runs to score late in the game. Unfortunately, it was not enough to catch up to the earlier efforts of Walters State. Defensively SMC allowed 12 hits overall and 3 errors.

The Pioneers battled back in the second game of the double-header, winning 6-5, and putting an end to the Senators 14-game win streak. SMC's hitting proved to be the difference; Houston Wrights RBI double in the bottom of the third allowed 2 runs to score. Immediately following, John Miller singled to center field which allowed Houston to score. Two errors In the bottom of the 5th inning by Walters State let Joey Tepper and Houston Wright score. In the 6th inning, Walters State tied the game up with an RBI. An single down the left field line by Tristan Shea in the bottom of the 7th inning allowed Michael Speck to score the go ahead run, winning the game for SMC. Pitching for the Pioneers was Chandler Brooks and Charles Schaum.

Pioneers improve their record to 11-8 overall and 2-0 in Region X. You can see SMC in action again today as they take on Cuyahoga Community College at 4:00pm.
