Assistant coach Jerome Fredrick Coney III is entering his 1st season at SMC following a 1 year stint as an assistant men's basketball coach at NCAA Division II Southern Wesleyan University (Central, SC) & a 3 year stint as an assistant men's basketball coach at his alma mater NCAA Divsion II Anderson University (Anderson, SC). He is a North Plainfield, New Jersey native who attended North Plainfield High School & later graduated from T.L. Hanna High School after moving to Anderson, South Carolina just prior to his senior year. While in high school, he played basketball & football, then he played basketball in college at Anderson University. Coney graduated with a dual concentrated Bachelor of Science in Marketing/Business Management from Anderson University in 2014 & finished his MBA in 2016.

As an assistant coach at both of Coney's previous stops, his duties involved developing players, on-court coaching, recruiting, being the academic liaison, fundraising, and meeting all video coordinating/technology needs among other coaching responsibilities. Additionally, at Anderson University, Coney served as the head coach of the JV basketball team in 2015. Coney is married to the former Devri Burdick and the two now live in Spartanburg.
