SMC Athletics Hires Doug Smith to Lead Men’s Soccer Program

Spartanburg, SC – Spartanburg Methodist College athletic director Megan Aiello announced today that the program has hired Doug Smith as the new men’s soccer coach.

“I am excited that Doug will be returning to the athletic staff here at SMC. His professionalism and passion for coaching are unrivaled,” Aiello said. “Couple that with his recent experience at the NCAA Division I level, we are confident that Doug is the right person to lead this program as we transition from the NJCAA to the NAIA.”

Smith returns to Spartanburg Methodist College after spending the 2023 season at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where he was an assistant coach for the Spartans. Prior to joining the Spartans staff, Smith was a volunteer coach at SMC for two years. While at SMC, Smith assisted with practice and game day responsibilities and the recruitment of future Pioneers. Smith played collegiate soccer for Limestone from 2006-2007 before serving in the Marine Corps for ten and a half years. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Smith continued his collegiate career, playing at Palomar College in California.

“It is with immense pride and a deep sense of responsibility that I accept the role of head coach for the Men’s Soccer team at Spartanburg Methodist College,” Smith said. “I am fully dedicated to cultivating a program that not only competes at the highest levels but also instills the values of teamwork, discipline, and academic excellence in every athlete. I would like to thank President Scott Cochran and Athletic Director Megan Aiello for this opportunity.”

Smith will complete his Bachelor of Science in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy later this year.
