The men's tennis team traveled to USC-Sumter this past weekend to compete in The USC-Sumter Invitational.

The men's tennis team traveled to USC-Sumter this past weekend to compete in The USC-Sumter Invitational. The tournament consisted of teams from Coker College, The Citadel, Benedict College of Columbia SC, SMC, and USC-Sumter.

In the opening match, Coker College defeated SMC by a score of 9-0. The Cobras from Hartsville, SC were led by Head Coach Bill Simpson.

In the second match on Friday, Benedict College of Columbia SC, coached by Gary Taylor, def. SMC by a final score of 5-4. The Tigers clinched the match when Quentin Eloise at #2 def. SMC's Austin Green 6-1, 6-3. The Pioneers Hufelder (Jr.) Duarte continued his stellar play with a routine 6-2, 6-2 win over the Tigers Nathaniel Pinkney. With the win Duarte improved to 4-1 on the season at #1 singles.

On Saturday February 11 SMC, lost to The Citadel by a final score of 8-1. The Bulldogs from Charleston SC, were led by Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Kriese. The #1 doubles team of Hufelder(Jr.) Duarte (Johns Island, SC) and Austin Green (Moore SC), played an excellent match and def. The Citadels #1duo of Roy Hobson and Matthew Henson by a score of 8-4. In singles, The Citadels Mike Anzalone exacted revenge on Duarte, one week later, by a score of 6-4, 6-4. The #1 singles match was played at an extremely high level of tennis, with both players trying to grind out a hard fought victory.
