Pioneer Softball adds Todd Justus to staff

Broome softball coach Todd Justus has stepped down to become the assistant coach at Spartanburg Methodist College.

He will assist Pioneers head coach Thad Fox. "Todd is a first class person, father, and softball coach. He will be a great addition to our program and will bring a ton of energy. I'm really looking forward to having him here on a daily basis."

Justus has spent 12 years at Broome, with the past eight as head coach. He's also been an assistant football coach since 2004.

Justus posted a 95-60 career record, winning three region titles (2009-11), three district titles (2008-10) and leading the Centurions to the upper state final in 2009. He was a three-time region coach of the year (2009-11) and head coach of the North-South all-star team last year.

Justus will remain as Broome's service learning and workplace coordinator. He said the timing worked out when deciding to become an assistant coach SMC.

"It's a good opportunity," he said. "They played in the national championship tournament last year. It's something we've talked about for a couple of years. Coach Fox and I are great friends and he's done clinics here at Broome. Last year was just a timing issue. This year it came back around. I'm a firm believer if it comes back around that you've got to take a firm look at it."

Justus has already started getting his feet on the ground on the recruiting trail. He added his duties will be helping with "all aspects" of the program.

"Whether it's hitting or fielding, I'll do whatever Coach Fox needs me to do that day," Justus said.

Justus credited his players for his success.

"Over the years, we have been able to win 95 games with some of the best players in the state," Justus said. "So many players helped build the program to what it is today. I've had a great time at Broome and cherish the years."

Broome athletic director Skip Frye said Justus' time as a coach is appreciated.

"We thank Coach Justus for the job he did leading our softball program," he said. "He always put in much time, effort and commitment to helping our young ladies be the best they could be. I wish him well as he takes this step in his coaching career."

SMC just completed their season with a 38-14 overall record and a 7th place finish in the NJCAA National Championship last month in St. George, Utah.
