Softball opens 2015 season with sweep

DEMOREST, GA,  The Lady Pioneers (2-0) traveled to Piedmont College on Sunday to open their 2015 season against the Piedmont College Lions jv team. On a cold and rainy day the Pioneer bats were were on fire as they scored 21 runs and collected 30 hits including four homeruns. SMC won game one 13-1 and game two 8-1. 

 

GAME ONE: 13-1

Freshman short stop Mary Hart (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge High) opened the game with a triple off the 225 foot center field wall and scored on sophomore Kolby Harrison's (Simpsonville, SC/J.L. Mann High) base hit to right field. SMC exploded in the second inning scoring eight runs as Freshmen Bailey Pearson (Duncan, SC/Byrnes High) and Kaylee Freeman (Concord, NC/Central Cabarrus High) singled to start the inning, Pearson scored on Hart's double to center.  Sophomore Caroline Hill (Inman, SC/Chapman High doubled to left field and scored on freshman Leslie Altman's (Turbeville, SC/East Clarendon High first collegiate homerun. Morgan Smith (Greenville, SC/J.L. Mann High) singled to center then came around to score the sixth run of the inning after sophomore Carson O'Donald (Greenville, SC/J.L. Mann High) homered to deep left field. Pearson doubled for her second hit of the inning and scored of Chandler Cook's (Hampton, SC/Thomas Heyward Academy) rbi single to left. Caroline Hill hit her first bomb of the year with a solo shot to deep left center in the third to make the score 10-0. SMC tacked on two more in the fourth and one in the fifth after freshman Morgan Howard (Mt. Pleasant, SC/Wando High) reached first on a hit by pitch and scored on Kaleigh Busbee's (North Augusta, SC/North Augusta High) single to left field. 

O'Donald (1-0) picked up her first win of the year working five innings giving up one run on one hit with five strikeouts. O'Donald was perfect through four innings before hitting three and walking one in the final frame. 

 

GAME TWO: 8-1

Caroline Hill opened the scoring for the Pioneers in the top of the first inning with a two out solo homerun to right field. Freshman Leslie Altman and Morgan Smith singled but were left stranded. Chandler Cook doubled to and scored on a single by Mary Hart to make the score 2-0 after two innings. Cook collected her second hit of the game and scored on Kolby Harrisons slap down the left field line to give SMC a 3-0 lead. Piedmont College would cut the score to 3-1 after four innings but the Pioneers scored five runs in the rainy fifth inning after singles by Smith and Carson O'Donald, a two rbi double by Bailey Pearson. Freshman Tori Crowley (McBee, SC/McBee High) picked up her first collegiate hit with a rbi single to center. 

Pearson (1-0) earned her first collegiate win working four innings, giving up one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. Kaylee Freeman worked a scoreless fifth. 

SMC will return to action this weekend as they travel to East Georgia State College on Saturday and host Patrick Henry Community College on Sunday.
