SMC Softball improves to 6-0

SPARTANBURG, SC.,  SMC Softball won two more games on Sunday and improved to 6-0 on the young season. The Pioneers defeated Piedmont College JV 15-2 and 23-1, both games ended in five innings due to the run rule. The Lady Pioneers have hit 14 home runs in and scored 97 runs in six games so far this season. 

Game one- SMC 15 Piedmont College 2

SMC took complete control of game one by scoring nine runs on eight hits in the first inning. Morgan Howard (Mt. Pleasant, SC) led the Pioneer hit attack by going 3-3 with three runs batted in. Bailey Pearson (Duncan, SC) also went 3-3 with three runs scored. Freshman catcher Natassja Hatcher (Chesterfield, SC) was 2-2 with a double, two runs batted in, two runs scored and a stolen base. Leslie Altman (Turbeville, SC) was 2-2 with a double. Freshman Breanna Hagerty delivered a pinch hit three run home run for the Pioneers in the third inning. Kaylee Freeman (Concord, NC) picked up her third win on the year and freshman Karly Patterson (Blue Ridge, SC) tossed three solid innings in relief. 

Game two- SMC 23-  Piedmont College - 1

Freshman pitcher Teagan Crosby tossed a complete game four hitter for her first colleigate win as the Pioneers completed the sweep of Piedmont College. SMC pounded out 22 hits including five home runs and six doubles in the game. Leslie Altman hit two more home runs and drove in four runs. Ashton Osborne (Woodruff, SC) went 4-4 with two doubles, four runs scored and two runs batted in. Freshman Lindsey Mason (3-4, 3 runs batted in) homered in her first at bat of the season. Breanna Hagerty (Granite Falls, SC) went 2-3 with two runs batted in and hit her second home run of the day. Sophomore catcher Morgan Smith delivered two doubles and scored three runs. Freshman centerfielder Olivia Dunlap (Pawleys Island, SC) went 3-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Mary Hart (Harrisburg, SC) continured her hot hitting with a 2-3 day and three runs batted in. Freshman Kayla Price (Indian Land, SC) hit her first collegiate home run in the fourth inning.

Upcoming schedule: SMC returns to action this weekend as they travel to Marianna, Florida to play the defending National Champions Chipola College in the Chipola Invitational. SMC also plays Northwest Florida State College, Tallahassee, Florida Southwestern, Columbia State College, and Georgia Military. SMC also plays at Andrew College on Sunday afternoon.
