Softball wins two, win streak at 12 in a row

SPARTANBURG, SC., SMC Softball won two games against Belmont Abbey's JV team on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers (19-5) won game one 8-7 and game two 17-2 in five innings. Kaylee Freeman earned both wins to improve to 8-1 on the season. SMC had 25 hits, 8 doubles, and 4 homeruns in the two games. 

 

GAME ONE: SMC 8  Belmont Abbey 7

SMC jumped out front with four runs in the first inning and held a 7-4 lead until Belmont tied the game in the fifth inning. Morgan Howard reached on an error and scored on Caroline Heaton's base hit to give SMC an 8-7 lead. Kaylee Freeman struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief to earn the win. Maddy Labrador (2-3, 2R, HR) Kayla Price and Morgan Howard each had a double and drove in two runs.

 

GAME TWO:  SMC 17  Belmont Abbey 2

Kaylee Freeman picked right up where she left off in game one tossing three perfect innings and improved to 8-1 on the season. Teagan Crosby worked two innings of relief and allowed two runs, one earned. 

SMC scored eight runs in the first inning before an out was made and cruised to their 12th win in a row. Breanna Hagerty, Brooke Palmer (2-3 4RBI), and Freeman (2-2 2RBI)  all hit home runs. Morgan Smith was 2-3 with 2 RBI and Olivia O'Neal (2-3 2RBI) to help lead the offensive attack for SMC. 

 

NOTES: The Pioneers have scored 238 runs and hit 29 homeruns in 24 games. Eleven different players have hit a long ball so far this season. 

SMC will host Gordon State College on Saturday in a double header beginning at 2:00pm.
