Pioneer softball wins Region X Tournament Championship

SPARTANBURG, SC., SMC softball rolled through the Region X Tournament this past weekend with wins over Pitt Community College (8-0), Louisburg College (10-8) and USC Sumter (13-2) to advance to the District I Championship on May 6th and 7th in Alexander City, Alabama.
SMC 8 Pitt CC 0
SMC made quick work of Pitt CC in their opening game of the tournament winning 8-0 in five innings. Bailey Pearson earned the win with four shutout innnings and Kayla Price finished off the final frame. Maddie Ward and Lindsey Mason (2RBI) each had two hits and Morgan Smith hit her fifth home run of the season.
SMC 10 Louisburg 8
Louisburg jumped out front of the Pioneers with two runs in the first inning but SMC answered back with a run in the first inning and four more in the second to take a 5-2 lead. The Hurricanes put up a strong fight with a five run third but could not keep the SMC offense off the board as they put up three in the third inning and one in the fifth and sixth. Maddy Labrador finished 3-4 with two runs and three rbi and two stolen bases. Kaleigh Busbee went 3-4 and Maddie Ward went 2-3 with two rbi. Brooke Palmer hit her 9th home run of the year and drove in two runs. SMC pounded out 13 hits in the game. Freshman Kayla Price improved to 11-2 on the season with four solid innings of relief. Price allowed one run on four hits with three strike outs.
SMC 13 USC Sumter 2
Once the nerves went away the Pioneer couldn't be stopped. Sumter scored two in the top of the first but the lead was short lived as Bailey Pearson(3-4, 2R, 4RBI) blasted a three run home run to give SMC the lead. Sophomore Kaylee Freeman was just about perfect the rest of the way as she earned her 14th win of the season tossing a complete game while striking out seven. SMC scored nine runs in the fifth inning, and had 17 hits in the game. Brooke Palmer broke the game open with a grand slam in the fifth. Mary Hart went 3-4 with three runs and two rbi. Lindsey Mason, Leslie Altman and Maddy Labrador each had two hits while Olivia O'Neal, Caroline Heaton, and Olivia Dunlap all had pinch hit singles.
Bailey Pearson was named MVP of the Region X Tournament while Maddy Labrador, Maddie Ward, Kaleigh Busbee, and Brooke Palmer each earned All Tournament team honors.
