SMC Softball Looking To Be Strong In 2022 Season

Softball kicks off their 2022 season on the road at Cleveland Community College on February 5th and then will host Caldwell Community College on February 6th.

The Pioneers are looking to make a comeback after having a rough year last season and finishing third in the Region. With 9 returners (1 junior and 8 sophomores) and 18 freshmen, the softball team is a very young team for 2022. Junior, Caitlyn Cox, has returned and will be stepping up on the mound for SMC this year. The Lady Pioneers also brought in some strong pitchers from local areas, Samantha Carver (Chesnee HS), Madie Andrews (Darlington HS), and Emma Spradley (Lugoff-Elgin HS).

"With the talent and leadership that we have from our returners, like Elle Parent and Hanna McDonaugh, and then adding the talent of our Freshman, I am hoping that we are going to be very solid this year. We started in August with 32 players and we are now down to 27. Many people think that is a lot for a softball team but when you factor in injuries and covid, I think it's a great number to have and it gives me options. We had a decent Fall season, Caitlyn did not allow a run against Upstate, we lost to Erskine 6-5 and beat Belmont Abbey JV 9-1. Hanging with these teams like we did was great to see and we are looking to continue to grow and build so that we have a successful season. This team's energy, their love for the game, and for each other has been a game-changer!" -Coach Hill

SMC will have to win the Region 10 Tournament in May to proceed to District, which will be held at SMC. The winner of District will head to Yuma, AZ for Nationals.
