Wrestling falls short at Nationals

DES MOINES, IOWA-

The Spartanburg Methodist College wrestlers made it through the weather to Des Moines, Iowa and competed in the NJCAA National Wrestling tournament over the weekend.

The Pioneers had six wrestlers qualify for the NJCAA National Championship to be held in Des Moines, Iowa in two weeks. Hector Contreras (Spartanburg, SC/Dorman High)(125lb), Johnathan Contreras (Boiling Springs, SC/Boiling Springs High) (133lb), Ian Clevenger (Inman, SC/Boiling Springs High) (141lb), Seth Sirgo (Franklin, TN/Brentwood Academy/ Purdue) (149lb), DeAndre Johnson (Beaufort, SC/Battery Creek High) (157lb), and Tanner Chambers (Liberty, SC/Liberty High) (174lb).

SMC struggled to gain any momentum and fell short of achieving the program 's 10th All American. Picking up wins for SMC were Contreras in the 125 pound weight class, and Johnson at 157.

"Ultimately we did not wrestle to our potential this weekend, but it was good for our two upperclassmen to get experience heading into next season" stated Head Coach Rob Sater.
