SMC Gets Invited to the NWCA National Duals

Louisville, KY – The Spartanburg Methodist College Wrestling Team was invited to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Multi-Divisional National Duals this past weekend for just the 3rd time in program history. The NWCA National Duals is an invite tournament to the top 16 teams in the NJCAA for both scholarship and non-scholarship programs. SMC was pitted against #12 Harper College first round, #20 Jamestown College second round, and #16 Rochester Community and Technical College in a third round exhibition.

SMC found themselves on the wrong side of all three dual meets, losing to Harper 42-7, Jamestown 24-23, and Rochester 38-11. Caleb Spears had the toughest weekend of them all having to wrestle two individuals ranked second in their perspective weight class. In the Jamestown dual meet, Caleb bumped up in weight classes to wrestle the #2 ranked 184lber Cameron Page and #2 ranked Shane Siewert at 174lbs. Caleb ultimately lost both of those matches.

"The goal of the weekend was to wrestle Nationally Ranked opponents and that is exactly what we did. We got to see some teams and wrestlers that we would normally not face during the year and some of the top ranked guys in the country. It gives each individual a realistic look as to how and where they stand against the rest of the country. We know what we need to work on and how to get it done so that we can be on the podium at the end of the year" Says Coach Oliver.

The Pioneers will continue their schedule as they face Limestone College and Huntingdon College in Gaffney, SC next Sunday, January 13, 2019.
