Lady Pioneers Defeat USC Lancaster on Sophomore Day

The Women's Soccer team hosted the Lancers of USC Lancaster on 9.29 for a region10 match. Both teams come into the game undefeated in region play. The windy conditions made it tricky for each team throughout the game. Lancaster would put on the pressure early with 4 corner kicks in the first 5 minutes. The pioneer defense could not clear the ball out of the box 4 minutes into the game and a Lancer tapped home a rebound. The game would be back and forth the next 20 minutes until Beyonce Williams found Kaylee Damsen on a run through the defense and she touched it around the Lancer keeper. But Lancaster would grab the lead back 7 minutes later after some miscommunication with the Pioneer defense and goalkeeper. That lead lasted a total of 8 seconds. Alanna Hilton would bury a shot far post, after a quick kickoff from Laura Giraldo and Damsen. The half would end 2-2. Gwen Orr made 2 saves in the first half. Both teams regrouped at halftime and looked to grab the go ahead goal. The Pioneers would get the game-winner 13 minutes into the second half after Damsen intercepted a bad pass from a Lancer defender and put the ball in the back of the net. Gwen Orr would have to hold off some last minute shots from Lancaster trying to tie the game. She finished with 5 saves. The Pioneers separate themselves atop the Region10 standings at 4-0 and 8-1 overall. SMC travels to Atlanta, GA to play Motlow State on 10.3 at 1:00 pm.
