SMC Volleyball Attended the Annual Tournament at Catawba Valley

Hickory, NC – The SMC volleyball team traveled to Catawba Valley Community College for their annual tournament. The Pioneers went 1-3 against great competition. Aeyane Mattress and Abbey Darress were named to the All-Tournament Team.

 

Day one consisted of losses to Owens Community College and Pasco-Hernando State.

 

Set Scores vs #1 Owens: 25-22, 18-25, 13-25, 22-25

 

The Pioneers started the day off strong with an opening set win 25-22. But Owens lowered their errors and won the next 3. Janasia Hill led SMC with 10 kills hitting .643. Abbey Darress added 10 digs to the match and the team had a high 16 block assists.

 

Set Scores vs Pasco- Hernando State: 19-25, 14-25, 18-25

 

Aeyane Mattress led the Pioneers with 11 kills and Kameron Neese had a career-high of 18 digs. SMC had another great blocking match but too many net violations and service errors gave the match to Pasco.

 

Set Scores vs NOVA: 34-32, 25-21, 25-20

 

Although the first set started slow, the Pioneers came back from being down 10-17 to winning the set 34-32. This was due to great serve and pass. Mattress had a lights out match, hitting .531 with 18 kills. Savannah Ducote dished out 17 assists along with 9 digs. Anna McKnight had 4 out of the 7 service aces for the Pioneers and the team totaled 13 block assists.

 

Set Scores vs #3 Catawba Valley: 14-25, 22-25, 15-25

 

Once again, Mattress led the team with 10 kills. Asya Louden added another 6 kills hitting .357. Madison Nicholson closed the gap with Catawba by serving 4 aces and adding 8 assists. Neese had another 18 digs for the match.

 

The Pioneers have a busy week of great competition. On Tuesday, they head to Greenville to play Bob Jones JV. Wednesday, they drive to Toccoa Falls to have a rematch on their home court. Then the team will travel to #16 Wallace State for the weekend for games against Cleveland State and Catawba Valley.
