Lady Flyers Grab First Beach Win of the Spring - Host St. Andrews on Tuesday
The Sandhills Community College beach volleyball team picked up its first win of the spring with a 5-0 victory over Gaston College on Saturday at the Spartanburg Methodist College Invitational.
The Lady Flyers were defeated 4-1 by Erskine College on Friday and had a second match against Spartanburg Methodist stopped because of darkness with the host team leading 3-0.
In Saturday morning's opening match, the Lady Flyers were defeated 4-1 by Spartanburg Methodist.
The two-day event in Spartanburg, SC began an eight-day stretch that will have the Lady Flyers playing in three states.
On Tuesday they host St. Andrews University in a double-header with matches at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Then Coach Alicia Riggan's squad leaves early Wednesday for Tavares, FL to compete at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships held at Hickory Point Beach on Thursday through Saturday.
In Spartanburg, the Lady Flyers No. 3 doubles team of Kaitlyn Locklear and Camryn Lowe won all three of its matches over the two days. They were tied at a set piece against Spartanburg Methodist on Friday when darkness brought things to a halt.
In the Flyers final match of the two days against Gaston, the No. 1 through 3 doubles of Lexi Allen and L'Asia Jackson, Maddie Harris and Abby Quick, and Locklear and Lowe, were each 2-0 winners.
The 5-0 sweep was completed when the team from Dallas, NC didn't have enough players for the No. 4 and 5 doubles.
The Flyers No. 4 of KeKe Lawrence and Mya Mallard extended both their Erskine and Spartanburg Methodist opponents to three sets on Saturday.
Mackenzie Swett, who was paired with JaLasia Ray in the No. 5 doubles, suffered a concussion in the match against Erskine on Friday and was replaced by Kayla Sadowski.
