Jannai Maxwell Named Assistant Cross Country/Track and Field Coach at Spartanburg Methodist

Spartanburg, S.C. – Spartanburg Methodist Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field head coach Peyton Shelton has announced the hiring of Jannai Maxwell as the new Assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Coach.

“Upon arriving on campus, I was immediately impressed with the coaching staff and administration across the board,” said Maxwell. “Track and Field was something I always had a passion for growing up and what a blessing it is to partake in this field from a coach's perspective. I’m grateful for this opportunity and the belief in me from SMC. I look forward to propelling this young program into excellence alongside with Coach Shelton.”

“I am excited to welcome Jannai to our coaching staff,” said head coach Peyton Shelton. “He will be pivotal as SMC expands to a full track and field program and competes in the NAIA. This program is ready for the next level and Jannai is the coach to bring that.”

Maxwell, who is from Cape Coral, Florida, ran collegiately at Southern Wesleyan University in Central, South Carolina where he earned numerous honors as a sprinter. Among his honors, he was a three-time NCCAA All-American as a member of the 4x100m relay, including a national championship in 2018. He also earned three all-Carolinas Conference honors in 2019 as a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Individually, Maxwell was the NCCAA national champion in the 200 in 2018.

After graduating with his bachelor’s in exercise science, he has previously served as a physical therapist technician at Joint Implant Surgeons as well as a strength and conditioning coach at Apex Physical Therapy and fitness manager at Around the Clock.

Maxwell is a certified personal trainer and strength and conditioning specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
