Strong Opening Day for SMC Softball
Strong Opening Day for SMC Softball
Spartanburg, SC- The Lady Pioneers opened the 2020 season playing at home against Surry Community College at 2 and 4pm on Saturday, Feb. 1.
The Pioneers tried to jump on the game early as Antuana Kinloch hit a rocket to center field and made a triple out of it. Unfortunately, SMC was unable to get Kinloch in to score a run the first inning. Although there weren't any runs scored in the first, these ladies wasted no time to jump on the board in the second. Scoring six runs in the second inning and 3 more in the third, SMC had taken a big lead. In the top of the fifth, Surry was able to put four runs on the board to make the score 9-4. The Pioneers answered back that they weren't done yet and scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game in a run-rule with the official score 12-4.
Game two started off with the same momentum as the first. The Pioneers picked up right where they left off and scored two runs in the first inning. They managed to get another run on the board going into the top of the third to make the score 3-0. Surry strung some hits together to score 2 runs and going into the bottom of the third it was a very tight game with little daylight left. Caitlyn Cox had a huge home run to allow the Pioneers to possibly end the game in 5 innings. After her home run, the others just followed. SMC put up 9 runs combined in the 3rd and 4th inning to end the game in another run-rule with the final score of 12-2.
"Today was such a successful day. We were a little nervous with the weather that we had on Friday but we knew that we had tarped the field and that we had done everything we could do to make the surface playable. We were up at 7AM pulling the tarp off to get the field ready this morning so that we could have a great day of softball. To see these ladies with such fire and excitement for game day and the way they came out and played was just amazing. It's awesome to have a group your first year as a head coach to just absolutely love the game, love each other and want to play for each other. The talent on this team is endless and I can't say it enough but I am so excited to see where this group is headed. As long as we keep our head on straight and work hard, they will do big things!" -Coach Hill
