Lady Pioneers Continue Strong Start To Region Play
SMC Softball started their Region 10 play-off with USC Union and got the sweep last Monday, March 15th. The Lady Pioneers faced the Fire Ants yesterday and got another two wins for Region.
Game 1: Won 9-1 in 5 innings
Cox pitched well for the Pioneers and defense stood strong behind her. That bats were hot and the runs continued to come in for game one.
Game 2: Won 8-7
Pioneers started off slow in the second game, the excitement was gone and they had settled with scoring 4 runs in the first few innings. The Fire Ants started up their bats later in the game forcing SMC to step it up. With one out in the bottom of the 7th and the score 7-6 with Sumter winning, Reine Wood hit a two-run home run to seal the Pioneer win, 8-7!
"The girls played really well the first game, the excitement and enthusiasm was there the whole time. We had a great crowd come out and support us yesterday! Game two is when things started going downhill a little. We started off decent for the first couple of innings and they got comfortable with the runs we had scored. Sumter started hitting and we made errors in the field. Luckily we turned the bats back on to stay tied or one run behind, Reine came in clutch with her home run to win the game for us! Enthusiasm is our word for the next week or two and that is something we are trying to work on. As a coach, we can't teach heart or the want to win, it comes from within. This group is so talented and I think we have the ability to accomplish so much this year, we just have to keep pushing!" -Coach Hill
