Bio

In Summer 2023, Patrick Moynihan became the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Spartanburg Methodist College. Coach Moynihan is best known for his player development and recruiting expertise and brings his proven ability to win to Spartanburg Methodist. Beyond winning on the court, Moynihan is passionate about building relationships within the communities he serves and is thrilled to embrace and become a proud member of the Spartanburg community.

Most recently, Moynihan was an assistant coach at Appalachian State. While there, he brought the Mountaineers to their first-ever Sun Belt Championship in the ‘20-’21 season, which was the Mountaineer’s first NCAA appearance in over 20 years. In addition to winning a Conference Championship, Moynihan’s four years at Appalachian State boast several other accomplishments, including the best Sun Belt regular season finish in the school’s history, a 7-game win turnaround in his first year as a Mountaineer, and 4 consecutive years without a losing season. App State played some of the toughest schedules in the country, resulting in a win against University of Louisville, two wins against University of Charlotte, and another against East Carolina University. While at Appalachian State, Coach Moynihan gained experience competing against some of the best college teams in the country, including Duke, The University of North Carolina, Wake Forest, Auburn, and NC State.

Before becoming a Mountaineer, Moynihan spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. He played a key role in building the program into one of the most competitive teams in the Big South Conference. In his two seasons with the Blue Hose, Moynihan saw PC's win total increase by five in the ‘17- ’18 season, and in the ’18-’19 season, they won an impressive 20 games, the most wins in the school’s division 1 history. That same year The Blue Hose played in their first-ever post-season tournament, where they advanced to the quarterfinals.

Prior to Presbyterian College, Moynihan worked as a video coordinator at Troy University during the ’16-’17 season. While with the Trojans, he helped spark a 13-win improvement from the previous season, resulting in Troy’s first-ever Sun Belt Tournament championship leading to an NCAA Tournament berth.  In the NCAA tournament, the Trojans were awarded a 15 seed against a Duke team led by Jayson Tatum. It was the largest single season win turnaround in school history, and it is still Troy’s only Sun Belt Championship.

Throughout his many stops, Moynihan has continuously separated himself as one of the top recruiters and player development coaches in the country.  Moynihan has coached several players who have continued on to big accomplishments of their own.  He coached Devontae Cacock while he was with the Atlanta Allstars, who went on to become an NBA Champion with the LA Lakers.  While at Presbyterian College Moynihan coached and recruited Oklahoma City Thunder signee Adam Flagler. Moynihan also recruited Corey Hightower to Presbyterian College, who proceeded to be named to the Big South All-Freshman Team. In his time with the Mountaineers Moynihan coached and worked interictally with Justin Forrest, who scored an impressive 2,000 points playing for the Mountaineers. He also worked closely with O’showen Williams and Isaac Johnson who both had their best collegiate year playing for Moynihan and are now currently playing professional basketball. Moynihan Coached Wesley Person Jr and Jeremy Hollimon during his time at Troy who were named to the All Sunbelt Team and All Sunbelt Tournament Team, respectively. At North Alabama he coached and recruited Dimario Jackson who was named to the All Gulf South Team.

Moynihan’s hard work has not gone unnoticed, and he boasts multiple awards at a national level. In 2020 he was named NABC Under Armour 30 Under 30 Team, which honors the 30 most outstanding coaches under the age of 30. That same year he was named to Silver Waves Media Top 50 Most Impactful Mid-Major Assistant Coaches in the country, and two years later in 2022 he was named on Silver Waves list for a second time.

Moynihan graduated from The University of North Georgia in 2013 with a degree in finance and management. Moynihan also was a four-year letterwinner on the North Georgia basketball team.
