Kyle Owings to lead Men's Golf

SPARTANBURG, SC – Spartanburg Methodist College is proud to announce that Kyle Owings will be overseeing the golf programs at the college beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year. "SMC has hit a hole-in-one with Kyle Owings as their Men's and Women's Golf Coach," says Danny Philbeck, Vice President of Enrollment, Public Information, Athletics and Athletic Fundraising.

Owings played golf at Dorman High School and collegiately at Anderson University. He was a four time Most Valuable Player, four time All-Conference, and in 2003 a Ping Regional All-American while playing golf at Anderson University. Owings played briefly after college, then was named the first women's golf coach at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Owings enters his eighth year as the Women's Golf Coach at SMC after serving for one semester at Presbyterian College. Owings has led the Pioneers to three National Championship appearances and has had numerous players go on to NCAA Division I and II schools. The Pioneers have been leaders in Region X competition since the first year of the program in 2007. In 2010, SMC finished the season with a JUCO national ranking of 10 in the country.

Owings will be taking over the Men's Golf team from his brother, Kurt Owings, who will now serve as the Junior Varsity Golf Coach at Dorman High School. Evan Zell, Assistant Club Professional at the Woodruff, SC Three Pines Country Club, will now be assisting Owings with both the Pioneer Golf teams.

Owings holds two master's degrees, one in Education from Converse College and more recently, a master's in Counseling from the University of West Alabama. Owings is also currently pursuing a Doctorate of Divinity from Trinity College of Theology.

Owings hopes to use his knowledge of golf and education-counseling background to help improve SMC golfers of all levels. Owings shared "every golfer is built differently and therefore, no two swings are the same. With that said, the foundation of golf is built upon a solid setup and is pursuing Class A Certification within the PGA.
