SMC Wrestling defeats Belmont Abbey College 23-13

SPARTANBURG, SC., Spartanburg Methodist College Wrestling team defeated Belmont Abbey College 23 to 13 in Thursday night's home opener. Earning dual match wins for the Pioneers were Marvin Galette, Maurice Williams, Lontay Greene, Jordan Hodge, Nicholas Siniard, and Jackie Hughes. This win marked Coach Oliver's first collegiate victory as Head Wrestling Coach.

SMC started the match off strong with a win by decision from freshman Marvin Galette (Rock Hill, SC) 13 to 6. Then followed it up with an outstanding performance from Maurice Williams (Orlando, FL) who came away with a technical fall 19 to 3, putting the team score at 8-0. Following it up with victories were Sophomore Lontay Greene and freshman Jordan Hodge who both won by decision in their matches.

The Pioneers got off to an early lead winning the first four matches of the night putting the team score going into 157 pound match 14-0. Belmont Abbey then rallied back winning the next three matches in a row, one by major decision and the others by decision. The team score stood at 14 to 10 with SMC leading.

Freshman, 184 pounder Nicholas Siniard (Brevard, NC) got SMC back into the match with his victory defeating Bryan Greenbuam 9 to 5.

In the 197lb bout Belmont Abbey forfeited to sophomore Jackie Hughes (Laurens, SC) giving the Pioneers six team points. Going into heavyweight Spartanburg Methodist College lead Belmont Abbey 23 to 10 ultimately locking up the victory for the Pioneers.

285lber Onassis Williams (Emerald, SC) was in a heated battle before losing his match with a last second takedown against Kevin Sigwarts. The final team score was 23 SMC 13 Belmont Abbey.

The Pioneers move forward with another tournament this Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the UNC Pembroke Open.
