The SMC men's tennis team hosted Oxford College of Emory on Saturday morning February 4. Oxford College of Emory University, also called Oxford College. Oxford College is a 2year residential college specializing in the foundation of liberal arts education. It is the birthplace and 1 of 9 academic divisions of Emory University.
The Eagles of the NJCAA Division III are led by head coach Pernilla Hardin, while the home standing Pioneers are led by first year head Coach Darren Patlen. After all was said and done, the Eagles prevailed and defeated the Pioneers by a final score of 6-3.
The Pioneers won the positions of #1 doubles, #1singles, and #2 singles. At #1 doubles the duo of Hufelder (Jr.) Duarte, Johns Island, S.C., and
Austin Green, Moore S.C., defeated Guillermo Corrada and Michael Pioso 8-4.
In singles, SMC's Hufelder Duarte defeated Guillermo Corrada 6-3, 6-3 in a highly skilled well fought battle. At #2 singles SMC's Austin Green defeated Michael Pioso 6-3, 6-2 in a match that Green controlled from the outset.
Coach Patlen's thoughts: Congratulations to coach Hardin and her Oxford College of Emory team. They competed hard and showed tremendous sportsmanship. I am extremely proud of Hufelder(Jr.) and Austin. They played a very sound doubles match and routined their opponents. They stayed within their comfort zone. In singles, it was great to see Austin get his first win of the season. He played a very sound match. At #1, Hufelder (Jr.) battled a very tough opponent and handled him in straight sets. I loved how Hufelder seized the momentum at 3-3 in the second set and slammed the door shut, by not missing, to finish the match. Our other guys played better, and hopefully with more experience, our comfort level and skill will rise as the season progresses. They competed well.
