SMC Athletics Hires Peyton Shelton to Lead Cross Country Program

Spartanburg, SC – Spartanburg Methodist College athletic director Megan Aiello announced today the program has hired Peyton Shelton as the new men's and women's cross country coach.

"I am excited that Peyton will be taking over our cross country program.  He played a major role in the recruitment of our incoming class and was instrumental in the training programs that led to the success of our program last year," Aiello said.  "Peyton truly understands the culture and mission of SMC and I am confident he is the right coach to take this program to the next level."

Shelton served as a volunteer assistant coach at Spartanburg Methodist College during the 2022-2023 season, where he oversaw recruiting and the training programs for both the cross country and track and field programs.

"I am excited to sustain and grow the legacy of great athletes here at Spartanburg Methodist College.  I would like to thank President Scott Cochran and Athletic Director Megan Aiello for providing me the opportunity to lead the Spartanburg Methodist College Men's and Women's Cross Country program," Shelton said.

An accomplished college athlete in his own right, Shelton ran cross country and track and field at Southern Wesleyan University.  In his time at SWU, Shelton was the 2019 Athletics Male

Newcomer of the Year, broke six track school records, and was a member of the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll from 2018-2022.

Shelton graduated Cum Laude from Southern Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science.
