The Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers defended their Region X title at home on October 29th. After remaining undefeated during regular season play, SMC was seeded first and swiftly took the title after sweeping Denmark Tech in the first semifinal, and USC Sumter in the Championship. The Pioneers kept their opponents under 15 points in each set while hitting over .250 in each match. SMC won their title with all players contributing to both matches. SMC also swept the Region X awards as Kendall Meinders, Delaney Castro, Marrit Preusting, and Tori Barr were named to the All-Region X Team, Tori Barr was name Region X Player of the Year, and first year head coach Brittany Farrell was named Coach of the Year.
“Being Region X Champions is not only a goal for our team but an expectation we set at the beginning of the year. The girls have put countless hours in the gym to meet this goal and I am very proud of them. While I wish we could soak up this moment for a long time our true test comes at Districts. Of the six teams fighting for those Nationals bids, four of them are ranked in the top 20. We have one shot to turn this team’s mission of going to nationals into a realty. We are focused and playing our best volleyball right now. We will be ready!”
