SMC Athletics Hires Patrick Moynihan to Lead Men’s Basketball Program
Spartanburg, SC – Spartanburg Methodist College athletic director Megan Aiello announced today the program has hired Patrick Moynihan as the new men’s basketball coach.
“We are thrilled that Patrick will be joining the athletic staff here at SMC. Patrick’s passion for coaching and his vision for our men’s program were clear throughout the interview process,” Aiello said. “He has shown a proven ability to build successful programs and has a clear understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest level.”
Moynihan comes to Spartanburg Methodist College from Appalachian State University, where he has been the Mountaineers assistant coach since 2019. During his time at App State, he helped lead the program to their first winning season in over a decade, their first ever Sun Belt Tournament Championship, and their first NCAA Tournament appearance in twenty years. As the recruiting coordinator for the Mountaineers, Moynihan has helped produce players that have earned such awards as Sun Belt All-Conference and Sun Belt Tournament MVP.
“I would like to thank President Scott Cochran and Athletic Director Megan Aiello for providing me the opportunity to lead the Spartanburg Methodist College Men’s Basketball Program. From the second I stepped onto campus I could feel the family environment and genuine passion to better the lives of these student athletes,” Moynihan said. “I cannot make this transition without thanking Appalachian State University, Coach Kerns, and all of my former players. Without them I would not be where I am today. I am humbled and extremely excited to lead the SMC Men’s Basketball Program to new heights and build a championship culture. Go Pioneers!”
Prior to joining the Mountaineers staff, Moynihan was the assistant coach at Presbyterian College for two seasons. The Blue Hose saw immediate success during his time, garnering the most wins in school history, their first ever post-season appearance in the CIT, and numerous player awards such as Big South Freshman of the Year, Big South All-Freshman Team, and Big South Honorable Mention.
Moynihan earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Georgia and a Master of Science in Kinesiology from Troy University.
