Lady Pioneers Capture Another Region 10 Championship

The Lady Pioneers soccer team started the weekend off with the Region 10 semifinals against USC Salkehatchie. SMC got on the scoreboard within the first 2 minutes of the game when Laura Giraldo found Kaylee Damsen off a corner kick. 5 minutes later Beyonce Williams assisted Kayla Freeman to make the score 2-0. Dare Regan scored the third goal of the half from Freeman on a ball across the box. The second half was more offense from the Pioneers. 5 mores goals were scored. Damsen, Williams (2), Tiffani Rasmussen and Reagan Lowe. Assists went to Freeman, Myleigh Shaw, Sydney Fletcher, and Damsen. The Pioneers moved onto the Finals to take on USC Lancaster on 10.30.

The SMC Pioneers were ready to get some revenge from USC Lancaster after a loss on the last game of the season. A birth to the District tournament was riding on this game. The Pioneers showed more intensity to start the game with gaining more of the possession. SMC scored first in the 20th minute when Kayla Freeman put the ball over the Lancer Keeper. Kaylee Damsen played a great through ball to Freeman. It was only 5 minutes later when the Pioneers doubled the score after Sydney Fletcher dribbled through two Lancaster defenders and put another shot over the keeper's outstretched arms. Dare Regan and Kaylee Damsen were credited with the assists. Both teams regrouped at halftime. Lancaster came out in the second half with an edge to get back into the game. They limited the chances for the Pioneers to stretch the lead. The half would go back and forth with a lot of physical play by both teams. The Lancers would get a goal back after a Pioneer foul 3 minutes left in the game. SMC would be able to kill the last 3 minutes to win 2-1 and take the Region 10 Championship. The Pioneers will host the District tournament on 11.5 at 1:00pm against the Region 8 winner, Polk State College.
