Hedi McNeil finishes third in Brevard Classic, Pioneers take third overall

BREVARD, NC., The Spartanburg Methodist Men's Cross Country Team finished in second place at the Brevard College Classic on Friday, barely being edged out of the first place slot by host team Brevard College.  The women's team secured third place overall in their respective 5k race.  The race was held at Glen Cannon Country Club golf course during pouring down rain conditions.

The soggy conditions did not hinder freshman Heidi McNeil of the women's team from finishing third overall in the entire race field. McNeil was able to set the pace early and hold on throughout the race to finish in the top five. Sophomore Alicia Sanchez had a strong 12th place finish while freshman Sarah Davis crossed the finish line in 17th place. Freshman Hayley Singletary's big season PR was the difference in edging Erksine College by a point difference for the third place finish.

On the men's side, freshman Anthony Galvan and Kole Koterba swiped the team's top spots finishing eighth and ninth overall.  Not far off an overall top 10 finish was sophomore Glenn Daniels (12th) who helped punch another low scorer for the SMC team.  Rounding out the team's top finishers were sophomore Cameron Morgan and Kelvin Rosemond.  The men had good runs across the board from the whole team.

"For the men, we had a mission to win this invitational. We were close, but things did not work in our favor today."  Overall, "I know we will get better with our performances, but so will our competition so us working on the right pieces will be where our work continues" stated Head Coach Ken Roach.

Next up on the schedule is the Royals Challenge on Oct. 9th. The race will be held at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, NC.
