Lady Pioneers overcome heat and adversity for big win!

Lady Pioneers overcome heat and adversity for big win!

The Lady Pioneers traveled to Atlanta Silverbacks Stadium to take on #17 LSU Eunice. The heat had an impact from the start. Both teams looked to conserve energy to battle the hot turf throughout the game. The first 30 minutes had back and forth action with both teams having a few chances on goal. The Pioneers got on board first in the 35th minute when CJ Hawkins put a shot on goal and Camden Brooks would clean up a rebound from the Bengal goalkeeper. The half ended just after Gwen Orr (Pioneer Goalkeeper) collided with a LSU Eunice Forward as she was going for a loose ball. Gwen had to be helped off the field with an injury to the nose. She ended with 6 saves in the half. The SMC coaches had to regroup and find an emergency back up to put goal. CJ Hawkins was called upon to stand between the posts. She was amazing with 4 saves for 40 minutes of play in the second half. The Bengals tied the game in the 40th minute on a shot just over the outstretched arms of Hawkins. A tactical change was made when Grace White was subbed into goal. CJ was called upon again to put pressure on their defense. The lady Pioneers would dig deep with every ounce of energy to find the win. In the 90th minute, LSU Eunice committed a foul just inside the SMC offensive half. Krystal Martinez would play a ball on a dime to Caitlin Lagos as she heads the ball over a charging Bengal Keeper. The lady Pioneers would hold onto the final seconds to get the win over #17 LSU Eunice. SMC moves to 1-0-1 on the season. They will travel to Milledgeville, Ga to take on Georgia Military College on 9/1 and then South Georgia State on 9/2.

Coach Campbell says “This is the kind of win that brings a team together. When your starting goalkeeper goes out with an injury and you don’t have another option, other girls stepped up. They were going to win that game for Gwen. We had an opportunity to make a statement in the NJCAA and we did that today. Now we have to use this momentum as we have another tough 2 games this coming weekend.”
