Pioneers Take Down #3 Bulldogs

Pioneers take down #3 Bulldogs

The SMC Men’s soccer team traveled to Milledgeville, GA to take on the #3 D2 nationally ranked Georgia Military College.

After a weather delay earlier in the day the Pioneers began a long and hard battle. GMC came out fast with a few chances that went wide of the mark.

In the 37th minute Charles Muyimbwa intercepted the ball finding Victor Capitillo who played a well-placed ball to the far corner for freshman Brandon Serna’s one time cross to the far post for Charles Muyimbwa, who placed it into the back of the net giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Just a few minutes later in the 41st minute a penalty kick was awarded to Georgia Military College and they put it past Francisco Molinar to tie it 1-1 just before halftime.

The second half was no different with a hard fought battle with GMC seeing more chances against SMC. In the 77th minute, freshman, Brandon Serna found the back of the net from a free kick by Imanol Bautista-Ortiz for the game winner.

This is the first win against GMC for Head Coach David Cox, where his collegiate coaching career began under legendary Head Coach David Sexton.

Coach Cox said, “We have a good team, and tonight we showed that we are focused. GMC will be prepared for us when they visit Spartanburg later in the season. We will have to improve in a few areas if we want to keep this level of performance.”

SMC goes into region play 1-0-0 against USC Sumter (1-0-0) on Tuesday August 23rd 3:30pm at home.
