SMC Gets Win Over Merchurst North East and Niagara County CC
Sanborn, NY – The SMC wrestling team traveled to New York this past weekend for a two day event where they were first pitted against Mercyhurst North East and Niagara County Community College in a Dual Meet setting. On the second day, the Pioneers entered into the Thunderwolves Open tournament where each wrestler saw 8 other junior college teams and a few other four year schools in their perspective weight classes.
In the first Dual meet against Merchurst, the Pioneers only lost two out of the ten weight classes. Big win of the dual meet came from Cooper Kaminsky (Beaufort, SC) who beat the 6th Ranked wrestler in the Nation, Hunter Harnish.
The second dual meet was tightly contested against Niagara County Community College. This match up saw a total of 4 different ranked wrestlers for both teams. Once again brothers Tramon and Tramone Jenkins (Beaufort, SC) started off the dual meet with big wins for the Pioneers. However, Niagara moved two of their ranked wrestlers, CJ Walz and Freddy Eckles, up in weight classes to fill a hole in their lineup. They would win 4 matches in a row to put the dual meet in their favor, until Caleb Spears (Rutherfordton, NC) brought the momentum back to SMC with a technical fall in 2:52. Freshman, Camden Johnson (McDonough, GA) continued that momentum with a big fall over returning NJCAA National Qualifier, Sergio Crespo of Niagara. SMC would lock up the dual meet victory with two more wins at 197 and 285.
