Run-Neers Continue to Drop Time at Converse Kick-Off

Run-Neers Continue to Drop Time at Converse Kick-Off

The men started the day at the Milliken Arboretum in their 8K venture. Leading the way for the Pioneers were Zander Allen, 30:32, and Trey Armstrong, 30:53, setting personal bests for themselves. “These guys are really starting to find their groove at the college distance. Look for them to continue dropping time as the season progresses.”

At the #3 spot, Marc Mixtega got back into action with his first 8K of the season running a personal best time of 31:40. “It will be exciting to see Marc develop through the season already besting his time from last year!” Following Marc, freshman Bryce Strickland ran a PR time or 32:39. “Bryce is primarily an 800m runner so seeing him run well in aerobic races is reassuring for his track endeavors. Look for Bryce to gain some confidence on the xc course as the season progresses.”

Closing out the Pioneers at #5 was Andrew Riggs. Riggs opened his season in 33:58. “Surprise of the meet was Andrew being our #5. Andrew is typically in our third training group but was ready to let loose on our home course. Andrew’s hard work and commitment to the team is really pushing his development at a remarkable rate!”

“Overall, our men’s team had seven of eight personal bests, so we are really excited about that! We are very young, so we still have a lot to learn before the Region 10 Championships. It will be fun to see where we end up this season, but we are off to a momentous start.”

The women followed with a 6K race of their own. Leading the charge was Mikayla Wilson, 30:40. “Mikayla is starting of the season well ahead of last year. Her summer is paying off and we will look to build confidence as the season advances.” Following was Alondra Velazquez with a time of 31:40. “This was Alondra’s first 6K so that is something to get used to. She ran well and actually ran a faster pace compared to her 5K time, something to be excited about.”

Kiley Meadows and Hali Gardner opened their xc season finishing 3rd and 4th on the Pioneers depth chart. “The first one is always nice to get out of the way. It definitely showed us where we are at and where we can go from here. Look for them both to have drops in time next week!”

The women all ran personal bests and will look to continue their development in preparation for their Region 10 Championship.  “I like where the team is at coming off two races. We have a lot to work on to prepare for championship season, but we have the group to overcome our obstacles.”

Both teams will be racing at Queens University this Friday, 9/23.
