Lady Pioneers sweep Sumter, improve to 35-5

SPARTANBURG, SC., SMC Softball opened Region X play this weekend with a four game sweep of USC Sumter. The Pioneers had 43 hits, six doubles, and five home runs in the sweep. Bailey Pearson, Kaylee Freeman, and Teagan Crosby each tossed a complete game shut out in their starts. 

GAME ONE:  SMC 6   USC Sumter  0

Bailey Pearson (10-1) tossed a complete game shutout and had three hits, the Pioneers collected 12 total hits in the game. Morgan Smith went 2-3 with 2 rbi and Morgan Howard added two hits. Leslie Altman added her 8th home run of the season.  

GAME TWO:  SMC 4    USC Sumter  3

Kayla Price (6-2) earned the win and Kaylee Freeman picked up her first save of the season by getting the Pioneers out of a bases loaded 7th inning jam. SMC had 12 hits. Breanna Hagerty went 3-3 with two rbi and Kaleigh Busbee hit her fourth home run of year in the top of the seventh. Every starter had a hit in the game for SMC. 

GAME THREE:   SMC 7   USC Sumter 0

Kaylee Freeman was masterful in the circle allowing only four hits and striking out a season high 10 hitters. She improved to 12-1 on the year. SMC had 11 hits in the game and Hagerty added two home runs and drove in five runs. Morgan Smith added two doubles while Pearson went 2-4 with a double and rbi. 

GAME FOUR:   SMC 8   USC Sumter 0

Teagan Crosby improved to 6-0 on the year witha five inning shutout in game four and lowered her earned run average to 1.40. Ashton Osborne went 3-3 with a double, three runs batted in and her first home run of the season to lead the Pioneers. Kayla Price hit her second home run of the season to lead off the 5th inning. Elise Carter added a single and Caroline Heaton ended the five inning game with a walk off hit.

SMC has won 28 in a row and will travel to Walters State Community College on Wednesday and Pitt Community College this weekend.
