Marietta, Ga. – The Spartanburg Methodist College volleyball team went 1-1 in Friday's opening day of play at the Life Running Eagles Classic. The day saw the Pioneers win a five-set contest against Bryan, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 15-12. To end the day, SMC dropped a 25-19, 25-16, 25-20 decision to host Life.
In the five-set win over Bryan, three Pioneers registered double-digit kills. Brantlie Price paced the attack with a .259 hitting percentage and 13 kills. She was joined in double figures by Makinnley Smart and Aurora Aho, who had 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
SMC setter Tristan Craine was instrumental in setting the attack with 25 of the 47 assists. Seven-different Pioneers served up an ace with Smart recording a team-best three. Bailey Beck and Rylee Anderson were leaders on the frontline with three blocks – a block solo and two block assists.
The second matchup against the Running Eagles of Life saw the home team post a .253 hitting percentage with Chloe Teter recording 14 kills and a match-high .455 hitting percentage.
Smart led the attack for SMC with six kills as the Pioneers were held to a .040 hitting percentage. Craine and fellow setter Brook Noe had eight and seven assists, respectively.
The two-day tournament will culminate on Saturday when they St. Andrews (NC) and Brenau at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
