
Nationally-Ranked Georgia Gwinnett Defeats SMC
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Gwinnett scored five runs in the fourth and two in the fifth en route to a 12-6 win over host Spartanburg Methodist College in baseball action on Tuesday.
The Grizzlies (24-3) were led by a three-hit, four-RBI performance from Kyle Norton. Scott Seeker, who hit a pair of home runs, along with Sam Seeker, Alex Harrell, and Braxton Meguiar, each had two hits in the win. Scott Seeker finished with three RBIs, while Sam Seeker had two.
The Pioneers (10-16) were paced by a three-hit performance from Jarian Pinckney. Dario Astudillo, who hit a two-run home run in the eighth, contributed three RBIs and two hits, while Justin Dawkins added a solo home run in the ninth.
Spartanburg Methodist College got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Leo Lopez hit a triple to left field, then came around to score when a ball hit by Matt Smith was misplayed by the Grizzlies.
Georgia Gwinnett erased a 1-0 deficit in the fourth when Jacob Bohacek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Then, a pair of two-RBI singles put the visitors ahead 5-1. In the fifth, Scott Seeker hit the first of his two home runs, a two-run blast that extended the lead to 7-1. A run-scoring double by Astudillo in the sixth made it a 7-2 game.
The Grizzlies added two more runs in the seventh, but SMC responded with a two-run homer by Astudillo. Georgia Gwinnett tacked on three more runs in the ninth to secure the final margin.
Next, SMC will travel to the Sunshine State for a four-game series against the University of Fort Lauderdale. The action begins with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 21, and concludes with another doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.
