SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Spartanburg Methodist College and Montreat split a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Pionners took game one, 6-2 and the Cavaliers picked up the nightcap, 9-5.
Chance Greene hit a pair of home runs to lead SMC baseball to a 6-2 win in game one of the doubleheader. The two home runs sparked a come-from-behind victory for the Pioneers.
Montreat scored twice in the top of the first to take an early lead. Greene hit his first of two home runs in the second inning to cut into the deficit. Then, in his next plate appearance, he launched a three-run blast just inside the left-field foul pole, giving the Pioneers a 4-2 lead. SMC extended its lead with an RBI single by Matt Smith in the same inning.
A solo home run by Parker Winfield in the fifth plated the final run for the Pioneers. SMC used four pitchers, with Blake Exizian pitching the final two innings to improve his record to 3-0.
The second game of the doubleheader saw Montreat mount a comeback to split the series with a 9-5 win over the Pioneers. The Pioneers recorded seven hits in the nightcap.
Matt Smith had two hits, including a solo home run in the fifth. Chance Greene hit a two-run shot in the first to put SMC ahead 4-0. SMC scored four runs in the bottom of the first, but Montreat responded with five in the second to take the lead. They added two more in the third for a 7-4 advantage. Smith's solo home run in the fifth cut the deficit to two before Montreat plated two more runs in the same inning to secure the final margin.
Next, SMC will host another future AAC opponent when they face Truett McConnell on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
