Pioneers Win Opening Game of Series vs. Carolina
Winston Salem, N.C. – SMC scored two runs in the second inning and three each in the third and fourth on its way to a 9-5 win over host Carolina (N.C.) in the series opener on Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (13-21) were led by the middle of their order—Jarian Pinckney, Chance Greene, and Justin Dawkins—as they went 7-for-14 with seven runs scored and five RBIs in the win. The trio provided strong offensive support for three SMC pitchers, including Peyton Gardner, who earned the win.
The Bruins (7-17) had three players with two hits each in the loss.
SMC got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning for an early lead. In the third, Greene extended the lead with a two-run home run, followed by Dawkins' three-run blast in the fourth.
Carolina cut into the deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
With the Pioneers holding an 8-3 lead, the SMC pitching staff came together to limit the Bruins, forcing them to strand nine of their 13 baserunners over the final five innings to secure the win.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap up the weekend series.
