Facing a familiar opponent, the Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team took on Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons for the second time in five days on Saturday at Bridges Arena. The Lady Barons came away with an 84-58 win over the Pioneers.
Spartanburg Methodist College (2-6) was paced by an 18-point effort from Najah Gilliam in the loss. Krystal Johnson had nine and Destiny Middleton added eight in the contest.
Brewton-Parker College (5-3), who extended its winning streak to three games, were able to land four players in double figures. Andranique Stewart led the Lady Barons with a double double, scoring 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Teammate Destanee Wright also had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The visitors jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game and led for nearly the entire contest. An 8-1 spurt late in the opening quarter by the host Pioneers that included a 3-pointer each by Mia Hansen and Krystal Johnson tied the game at 19 with 1:40 left in the opening quarter. The Lady Barons scored the final four points of the quarter and led for the rest of the contest.
Next, the Pioneers will break for final exams and return to the court after a 14-day layoff to face Converse University on December 7 at 2 p.m.
