KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Despite landing three players in double figures – Mia Hansen (21), Destiny Middleton (15) and Krystal Johnson (12) – the Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team dropped an 86-62 decision to host Johnson University on Monday evening.
The host Royals (11-1) scored the first 10 points of the game, led from nearly start to fnish. Johnson was led by Jordan Heifner scored 18, making four 3-pointers and Emily Wilson added 15 on five 3-pointers to go along 16 from Hannah Jones in the win.
The Pioneers (3-9) came back from the early deficit to make it a three-point game with seven in a row with 4:04 left in the opening quarter. Later in the opening half, SMC went on a 7-2 spurt as Hansen made all three free-throw attempts with 7:33 left in the second quarter for a 20-18 lead.
A 12-2 run to end the first half by Johnson put the home team ahead for the remainder of the contest. The Royals put the game out of reach as they outscored the Pioneers by a 27-9 margin in the third quarter.
Next, SMC will face Tennessee Wesleyan at the Lady Royals Classic for its final game of 2024 on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
