BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball team dropped a 69-62 decision to Washington Adventist on Friday afternoon.
SMC (7-12, 3-3 CAC) was led by Destiny Middleton, who had a game-high 21 points in the loss. For Middleton, it is her fourth game on the season with at least 20 points and she also made five 3-pointers in the contest. Najah Gilliam added 10 for her 11th game in double digits.
Washington Adventist (12-9, 4-1 CAC) had balanced scoring in the win. Amani Ball nearly had a double double with 16 points and 9 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Bethany Fowler (14 points), Isabela Lujan-Gonzalez (13 points) and Deryanis Colon Velez (11 points).
The Shock took an early 12-3 lead on the Pioneers. Indicative of the season, SMC failed to concede and mounted a comeback. Gilliam and SMC tied it at 34 on the first possession of the second half when the junior hit a 3-pointer. Eventually, the Pioneers would take their first lead of the game, 37-34 on a 3-point play by Krystal Johnson. WAU countered the early threat with a 7-2 spurt for a lead for the rest of the contest. Twice, the Pioneers got within five of WAU.
It will be a quick turnaround for SMC, who will face host Fisher on Saturday at noon before heading back to Spartanburg.
