
Barons Take Down SMC Women's Basketball,
Mt. Vernon, Georgia – A surge early in the second half propelled host Brewton Parker College on past Spartanburg Methodist College women's basketball as the Barons posted a 73-57 win on Monday night.
JaiDah Liebert finished the contest with a team-best 13 points for SMC, who was joined in double figures by Krystal Johnson (12) and Destiny Middleton (11). With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 2-5 on the season.
Brewton-Parker College raises its record to 4-3 with three of its four wins coming at home. The Barons were paced by Angel McRae, who went 9-for-19 from the field for a game-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds and six steals. She was joined in double figures by Cori Keats, who had 15 with five 3-pointers and Destanee Wright, who had 14.
The Barons started the game on a 10-2 run, stretching the lead to as much 15 on a pair of occasions in the first quarter.
BPC built a lead as large as 19, 28-9, with 7:35 left in the second quarter. The Pioneers clawed back into the contest with 13-straight points, culminating with a 3-pointer by Liebert with 3:27 left in the first half to make it a six-point game, 28-22.
Then, a quick 7-1 spurt by the visitors tied the game at 29 and for the first time. Najah Gilliam gave the Pioneers their only lead of the game with a layup for a 31-29 advantage. The Barons regained the lead for the rest of the game when Keats hit a 3-pointer for BPC with 1:07 to go in the first half.
Another 3-pointer by Liebert in the early stages of the second half made it a one-point game, 38-37 with 9:21 left in the third quarter. Again, the Barons had a response to the surge by the visitors with 10-straight points to push the lead to double digits for the rest of the contest.
Next, the two teams will see each other again, this time on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bridges Arena in Spartanburg.
